L’inimitable Sandra Nkaké sera en concert ce mardi 25 janvier au Théâtre du Châtelet avec l’Orchestre National de Jazz (ONJ) pour rendre hommage à la grande dame du jazz, Billie Holiday et les grands standards américains. « Broadway in Satin » promets un beau mélange des sensibilités franco-américaines dont je tiens à cœur. Je voudrais bien me rendre à Paris pour ce concert, mais hélas. Donc à vous d’y assister et s’envelopper de la chaleur de la bonne musique malgré le froid dehors.

Dajla: En attendant 2011/ Waiting for 2011

Upon release of her first album Soul Poetry, the Parisian daily Liberation said Dajla is “one of the few French singers able to match her US nu-soul counterparts”.

Dajla, French soul/funk songstress and bass player from the burgeoning music scene of Nantes (Hocus Pocus and Tribeqa) will be making a comeback in 2011. Now based in London, she is working on her third album, The Love Principle with her partner in crime, Benjamin Bouton of Tribeqa.

Her EP, The Motherland, a more funk inflected release heavily inspired by afrobeat rythms, saw this little gem emerge – a title track duet with Metropolis of Foreign Beggars.

A la sortie de son premier album en 2006, Soul Poetry, Libération a remarqué Dajla comme “une des rares chanteuses françaises à pouvoir égaler les artistes nu soul d’outre-Atlantique”.

Dajla, chanteuse et bassiste soul/funk Nantaise, (dont la scène musicale en herbe nous a déjà offert Hocus Pocus et Tribeqa) sera de retour en 2011. Aujourd’hui basée à Londres, elle est en pleine production sur son troisième album, The Love Principle avec son complice Benjamin Bouton de Tribeqa.

The film tells the story of my American expat grandparents who moved from the US to France after WW2 to found their family. With as little as a $25 donation, you can receive credit on the film. Once called a “fearless femme C, jazz poet and sexy seductress” by the BBC, Yarah Bravo, and her husband, the much respected DJ Vadim just wrapped up some Paris gigs at Nouveau Casino and KUBE Hotel last weekend that I wish I could have seen. After hearing all the hype and then music about this international hip-hop duo, I knew the recent shows would have been well worth your time and mine. Having performed with everyone from the Roots, Mike Ladd, TTC, and Talib Kwali, Yarah also performs as part of the group One Self (Ninja Tune) with Vadim and Blu Rum 13, and as a solo artist. Yarah, a tireless performer and self-promoter, took time out of her globe-trotting schedule to answer my questions about the state of female hip-hop, and her continuous rise to the top. Check it…

Parisnoiresurblanc.com: There seems to be so few female rappers out there today. Why do you think this is and what do you think needs to be done to nurture the next generation of female MCs?
Yarah Bravo: when i was growing up i looked up to MC Lyte and L-Boogie. It only takes one girl to inspire many. One of the most beautiful things for me as an artist is when girls, especially younger girls, tell me i inspired them to start rapping. or inspired them to make music. Or they see me on stage, and they feel proud and say “i can do this too”. What more can i ask for? that’s a planted seed for a future generation right there…and i ain’t even old hahahaha. I think too many women in hip hop either act like dudes or complete sluts. How about just being human. this music is for everybody. i’m very confident in my femininity. And i dont feel intimidated by other men in the business . i know what i bring to the table is unique.
Yarah B.: There’s a bunch of people i haven’t performed with. but to be honest, my goal right now is push myself to the point where people want to perform with me, and not the other way around. I have sooooo many ideas that right now

PNSB: You’ve performed with everyone from Manu Chao to Grand Master Flash, to the Roots, who haven’t you performed with yet that you are dying to gig with?

Yarah B.: i just want to focus all my energy in performing with me. and the people i choose to surround myself with.

PNSB: How did you get your start and what advice would you give for up and coming hip hop performers?
Yarah B.: Everyone has their own journey to fulfil. my journey is not the same as an other artists journey.

i dont want people to do what i did and fail. i dropped out of school, and headed out to the school of life early. i bought myself a one way ticket, and never looked back. i am still on my hustle though. but i’m in charge of what i do!

PNSB: You’re based in London and I am sure you are down with some eclectic music crowds there. If you could put on a show and VIP after-party who would you invite to perform and check out your show?
Yarah B.: well i’m not really based anywhere. i got a place in London, but i’m barely there. i’ve spent the last couple of months in Berlin and around Europe. And I’m off to America in the spring. i pick up good music everywhere i go. but i have to admit that the bassier it is ..the better!

PNSB: I read your parents were activists from South America who moved to Sweden where you were born. Has their activism affected your music? If so, how?
Yarah B. : well it took me about 10 years to write a song of mine called “freedom fighters” just because i felt i could never capture or give justice to how my parents story truly effected me. i know i am extremely lucky to be alive, and to grow up in a society where i felt safe. this is not to be taken for granted when the majority of the worlds population live below the poverty line.

Parisnoiresurblanc.com : La scène hip hop semble manquer des rappeuses aujourd’hui. Pourquoi pensez-vous qu’il en soit ainsi et comment pourrons-nous pour nourrir la nouvelle vague des “FemmeCs”?

Yarah Bravo : Lorsque j’étais petite, j’ai admiré MC Lyte et L-Boogie. Il n’en faut qu’une pour inspirer d’autres filles. Une des plus belles choses en tant qu’artiste est de m’entendre dire par des filles, surtout des jeunes filles, que je les ai inspirées a scène ou faire de la musique. Parfois, elles me voient sur scène et elles déclarent avec fierté: “Je peux être comme elle!” J’en suis comble. C’est une graine plantée pour la génération de l’avenir-là. Et je ne suis même pas vielle…Haha. Je pense trop de filles dans le hip-hop sont soit trop masculines soit des vraies salopes. Et pourquoi ne pas êtres simplement humains? Cette musique est pour tout le monde.J’ai confiance en ma femininité et je ne suis pas intimidée par d’autres hommes dans l’industrie. Je sais que mon apport est unique.

Yarah B. :Il y a beaucoup de gens avec qui je n’ai jamais joue, mais a vrai dire, mon objectif maintenant est de m’avancer jusqu’au point ou les gens souhaiteraient jouer avec moi, et pas l’inverse. J’ai un taaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssss d’idées en ce moment.

PNSB: Vous avez joué avec tout le monde de Manu Chao à Grand Master Flash aux Roots, avec qui aimeriez-vous jouer mais avec qui vous ne l’avez pas encore fait?

Yarah B: Je voudrais juste me concentrer sur mes concerts et sur les gens avec qui je choisis de m’entourer.

PNSB: Comment avez-vous commence et quels conseils donneriez-vous aux jeunes artistes de hip hop?
Yarah B: Chacun parcours son chemin. Le mien est différent des autres. Je ne veux pas que les gens échouent en prenant le chemin que j’ai pris. J’ai abandonné mes études pour poursuivre l’école de la vie un peu tôt. N’ayant jamais regarde derrière moi, je me suis acheté un billet aller simple. Bien que je sois toujours presse, je suis ma propre patronne!

PNSB: Vous êtes basée à Londres et je suis sure que vous êtes fan des publics hétéroclites là-bas. Si vous pourriez monter un spectacle et ce qui suit, qui inviteriez-vous à jouer et assister a votre concert?

Yarah B: En effet, Je suis ne basée nulle part. J’ai un appartement à Londres, mais je n’y demeure jamais. J’ai vécu les derniers mois à Berlin et un peu partout en Europe. Je serai en Amérique au printemps. Je trouve de la bonne musique partout ou je me rends et j’avoue que plus il y a de la basse, plus cela me plait.

PNSB: J’ai lu que vos parents avaient été activistes en Amérique du Sud et qu’ils se sont ensuite installés en Suède où vous êtes née. Leur engagement a-t-il influencé votre musique? Si oui, comment?

Yarah B: Et bien, cela ma pris 10 ans pour écrire une de mes chansons intitulée “Freedom Fighters” simplement parce que, je ne pensais pas pouvoir rendre justice à l’histoire de mes parents, tant elle m’avait touchée. Je sais que j’ai beaucoup de chance d’être en vie et de grandir dans une société où je me sens en sécurité. Je ne présume rien alors que la plupart du monde habitent en dessous du seuil de pauvreté.

A peine à Paris une semaine, et le chanteur de soul acoustique suédois, Magnus Tingsek a déjà fait la nouvelle boîte parisienne la plus branchée, Scopitone avec Spleen, l’enfant terrible de la scène rap/rock/soul française. Les deux joueront Nouveau Casino à Paris vendredi, le 22 janvier. Tellement jalouse de ses dernières équipées, je pourrais crier, mais cela ne m’a pas empêché de lui poser quelques questions avant son prochain concert.

Un mélange équilibré de Jamie Lidell et Jack Johnson, Tingsek connaît bien l’industrie musicale à pleine vitesse. Musicien depuis l’âge de 16 ans, Tingsek a déjà été en tournée avec Willie Nelson (sans blague!) et a été sélectionnée pour la version Suédoise de Grammies (les Victoires américaines) cette année. En 2007, en plus, le magazine Elle (Suède) l’a nommé le Suédois le plus sexy. Aujourd’hui à la trentaine, le beau gosse, aux airs d’un surfeur-mannequin de Malmo, Suède, vient de sortir son quatrième album, Restless Soul, avec l’extrait (que j’aaaddddddddooooorrre!) “Six Years” chanté avec la suédoise Pauline (qui d’ailleurs représentera la Suède à Eurovision cette année.)

PNSB: Vous venez juste d’arriver à Paris. Quel est le premier endroit que vous avez visité? Tingsek: Dès mon arrivée, Spleen m’a emmené au concert de Paperboy à Scopitone.

PNSB: Donc, Vous jouez au Nouveau Casino la semaine prochaine avec l’artiste français, Spleen. Aimez-vous sa music? Allez-vous collaborer avec lui sur de projets dans l’avenir? (ça serait top!!!)
Tingsek: Je suis totalement fan de sa musique. Je pense qu’il est super!!!. Nous travaillons déjà sur des chansons ensemble. Nous continuerons à le faire pendant une semaine et peut-être inviteront d’autres gens dans le processus.

PNSB: J’ai entendu que Gerald Toto et Sandra Nkake sont de grosses fans de vous. Avec quels autres artistes français ou francophones aimeriez-vous travailler?
Tingsek: C’est génial d’entendre ça. Je ne le savais pas et malheureusement je ne connais pas beaucoup d’artistes français mais ça aller changer puisque j’ai trouvé un bon ami et collaborateur en Spleen. Cela ne sera pas mon dernier séjour à Paris où je ferai de la musique, c’est sûr!

PNSB: Vous enregistrez de la musique depuis longtemps. Restless Soul, c’est votre quatrième album (LP), Comment avez-vous commencé à chanter de la soul alternative en Suède? Les gens, Sont-ils étonnés de vous voir chanter avec votre voix si pleine de la soul?
Tingsek: J’enregistre des disques depuis l’âge de 16 ans, et il y avait donc pleins de sons qui sortaient. Je pense que la vibe soul y était toujours mais à evoluer pour chaque album. Parfois les gens sont étonnés, mais après m’avoir écouté pendant un petit moment, Je pense et espère qu’ils le vont comme une évidence parce que je mets chaque cellule de mon corps à travailler lorsque je chante.

PNSB: Parlez-nous de Slakah the Beatchild, qui est-il et comment avez-vous collaboré pendant votre d’enregistrement de Restless Soul?
Tingsek: Slakah est un artiste/parolier/producteur génial de Toronto qui m’a trouvé à travers Myspace. Apres quelques mails, J’ai décidé de lui envoyer une chanson que j’avais enregistrée. Je lui ai demandé d’enregistrer un vers et voir s’il avait d’autres idées. La chanson était “Leave it all behind” de mon dernier disque et il l’avait parfaitement arrondie. J’ai instamment trouvé en lui quelqu’un avec qui je pourrais travailler. Donc, je l’ai invité en Suède et le flow était trop fort.

PNSB: Avez-vous été déjà en tournée aux EUA? En avez-vous des projets de le faire?
Tingsek: Pour l’instant, je n’ai que joué quelques concerts acoustiques, mais Espèrons que mon album sortira “pour du vrai” là-bas et puis nous monterons une vraie tournée. C’est bien sur ce que je souhaiterais qu’il se passe en France, d’ailleurs.

Swedish acoustic soul singer, Magnus Tingsek has been in Paris less than a week and has already scoped out Paris’ hottest new night club, Scopitone with Spleen, the “enfant terrible” of the French rap/rock/soul scène. Both will be playing Nouveau Casino in Paris on Friday, January 22. Needless to say, I am so jealous of his adventures I could scream, but that didn’t stop me from asking him a few questions in advance of his upcoming show.

A balanced mix of Jamie Lidell and Jack Johnson, Tingsek is no stranger to life in the fast-paced music scene. Recording since age 16, Tingsek has already toured the US with Willie Nelson (seriously!) and has been nominated for the Swedish version of the Grammies. In 2007, Swedish Elle even named him the country’s sexiest man. The now thirty-something musician with surfer-model good looks from Malmo, Sweden just released his fourth full-legnth album, Restless Soul, featuring the single (I love, love, love!) “Six Years” sung with fellow Swedish singer, Pauline (who, by the way, will be representing Sweden at this year’s Eurovision competition).

PNSB: You’ve just arrived in Paris, where is the first place you visited?
Tingsek: The second I came here Spleen took me to a concert with Paperboy at Scopitone.

PNSB: So you’re playing Nouveau Casino next week with French artist Spleen, Are you a fan of his music? Any plans to collaborate together on future projects? (That would be amazing!!!)
Tingsek: I am definately a fan of his music. I think he is amazing!! We’re already working on songs together. We’ll keep on doing that for a week and might even include some more people in the process.

PNSB: I hear French artists like Gerald Toto and Sandra Nkake are big fans of yours. Are there any other French or French speaking artists you like and would like to collaborate with?
Tingsek: That’s great to hear. I didn’t know that and unfortunately I don’t know much about French artists yet but that will definitely change since I found a good friend and collaborator in Spleen. This is not the last time I’ll be in Paris making music, that’s for sure.

PNSB: You’ve been recording for a long time. Restless Soul is your fourth full-legnth album, how did you get your start in Sweden singing alternative soul music? Are people often surprised to see you sing when you have such a soulful voice?
Tingsek: I’ve been recording music since I was 16 yrs old so there’s been alot of different sounds coming out. I think the soul vibe has always been there but has grown stronger for every album. Some times people are surprised but after hearing me for a little while I think and hope that people see it as obvious because I put every single cell in my body to work when I sing.

PNSB: Tell us about Slakah the Beatchild, who is he and how did your collaboration grow during the course of the recording of Restless Soul?
Tingsek: Slakah is a great Artist/songwriter/Producer from Toronto that found me through myspace. After some time of mail correspondence I decided to send Slakah a song I recorded and asked him to record a verse and see if he had any other ideas.. The song was “Leave it all behind” from my latest album and he finished it off perfectly. I instantly found someone I really felt I could work with so I invited him over to Sweden and the flow was total.

PNSB: Have you toured the US yet? Any plans to do so?
Tingsek: So far I have only been there playing acoustic but hopefully I’ll get my new album out there for real so I can go on a real tour. This is of course also my plans for France.
