Having heard about Majiker and his success working with Camille, Melissa Laveaux and Maya Barsony, I was curious to find out what made this gifted musician/producer tick. On the spur of the moment, I sent him five questions asking if he might have time to answer them from me, a total stranger. Much to my surprise, he responded a day later with some thoughtful responses about his latest projects.
Ayant entendu parler du Majiker et son succès avec Camille, Melissa Laveaux et Maya Barsony, J’étais curieuse de savoir ce qui motivait ce musicien-producteur doué. Sur un coup de tête, je lui ai envoyé cinq questions à répondre à une inconnue totale, moi. Quelle bonne surprise, il m’a répondu un jour plus tard avec des réponses réfléchies sur ses projets actuels.
1. Your sounds seem very percussive and onomatopaeic. What kinds of sounds inspire you to make music from them?
Tes sons sont très percutants et onomatopéiques. Quels genres de sons t’ inspirent pour faire de la musique ?
I have performed as a percussionist in many varied contexts, and I’m increasingly fascinated by rhythm, and the relationship between ‘groove’ and the spoken word. This comes from a curiosity for foreign languages and exploring the relationship between a language and it’s music, especially folk and popular music. For example, I’m sure that the melodious and catchy pop music which Sweden is famous for has a link with their melodic and bouncy language intonation.
J’ai joué en tant que percussioniste dans des contextes variés. Je suis de plus en plus fasciné par le rhythme et la relation entre le « groove » et la parole. Cela vient d’une curiosité pour des langues étrangères et de l’exploration entre une langue et sa musique surtout la folk et la musique populaire. Par exemple, Je suis sur que la chanson suèdoise à la fois mélodieuse et entraînante pour laquelle la Suède est reconnue est liée à l’intonation mélodique et rebondissante de la langue.
2. How long have you been working in music and what was your big break?
Depuis combien de temps travailles-tu dans la musique et quand as-tu eu de la veine ?
I have always made music and started recording and producing seriously from the age of about 15. I don’t believe in ‘big breaks’. Everything I have experienced in life and in my work has informed and shaped my artistic path. It was years of hard work refining my craft that led to the enormous commercial success of Camille’s album ‘Le Fil’ which I produced with her. It was wonderful how that project resonated with the audience in France and abroad.
J’ai toujours fait de la musique et ai commencé à l’enregistrer et la produire serieusement depuis l’âge de 15 ans. Je ne crois pas au concept du « déclic ». Tout ce que j’ai vécu dans ma vie et mon travail a informé et formé mon chemin artistique. Ce sont des années de travail et de raffinment de mon métier qui ont mené au grand succès commercial de l’album de Camille, Le Fil que j’ai produit avec elle. C’était génial de voir le projet retentir avec le public français et étranger.
3. You seem to work exclusively with female singers, what is your attraction to the female voice?
Tu sembles à travailler exclusivement avec des chanteuses, qu’est-ce qui t’attire à la voix féminine ?
I’m not sure, and I don’t want to analyse it too much! I’ve just always preferred the female voice, even from a very young age. However, I have worked with male vocalists, notably Sacha (Bernardson) whose debut album ‘Lave Tes Oiseaux’ which I produced was released last week. Although I must admit that it was partly the ambiguous nature of his vocals, which sometimes sound quasi-female, that attracted me to his work. On a deeper level, I guess there must be something about female vocal expression that is fascinating for me.
Je ne suis pas sur, et ne voudrais pas trop l’analyser ! J’ai juste toujours préferré la voix féminine, depuis même un tres jeune âge. Cependent, j’ai travaillé avec des chanteurs, notamment Sacha (Berdardson) , dont j’ai produit son premier album « Lave tes Oiseaux » ( « Wash Your Birds ») qui est sorti la semaine dernière. Bien que, j’avoue que ça soit due à l’ambiguïté de sa voix, ce qui donne un son quasi-féminin et attirant. Plus profondément, je pense qu’il doit y avoir un certain je ne sais quoi dans l’expression vocale féminine qui me fascine.
4. What can you tell us about your personal project: Body Piano Machine?
Pourrais-tu nous éxpliquer ton projet personnel : Body, Piano, Machine ?
It started as a virtually instrumental album, born from my desire to combine elements from those three instruments: the human body, the acoustic piano and my Yamaha PSS 270, a child’s keyboard that my
brother owned when we were kids. As the tracks developed I started to write melodies, some of which I sang myself, some of which I developed and recorded with guest female singers such as Camille, Maya Barsony and China Moses. I am currently negotiating the contract to release the album and it should be available around March 2009.
Recently I have been performing a very special show based on these songs to go hand in hand with the album. With my on-stage collaborator Benedicte Le Lay we present a colourful, joyful and evocative mixture
of theatre, dance and visual art, with a large chunk of cheeky pop fun to entertain and intrigue the audience! The next shows in Paris are on 27th November and 11th December 2008 at Le Sentier Des Halles (the
shows start at precisely 20h00). Make sure to catch it, as these are the only shows we have planned for the time being.
Tout a commencé comme un album quasiment tout instrumental, conçu de mon désir de mélanger des éléments des trois instruments : le corps humain, le piano acoustique, et mon Yamaha PSS 270, un clavier pour enfants ayant apartenu à mon frère pendant notre enfance. En developpant des morceaux, j’ai commencé à écrire des mélodies dont j’ai interpreté quelques-unes moi-même et d’autres j’ai developpé et enregistré avec des invitées telles que Camille, Maya Barsony et China Moses. Actuellement, je négocie un contrat pour sortir un album qui devrait être disponible aux alentours de mars 2009.
Récemment, je me suis mis à interpréter un show très spécial tiré de ces chansons qui correspond à l’album. Avec mon collaborateur de scène, Benedicte Le Lay, nous présentons un beau mélange de théâtre, danse et d’art visuel, plein de couleur et de joie, avec une grosse partie de pop culotté pout divertir et intriguer le public ! Nos prochains concerts à Paris sont le 27 Novembre et le 11 Decembre 2008 à Sentier des Halles à 20h précises. Ne les ratez pas, comme ce sont les seuls concerts prévus pour le moment.
5. What about Paris makes it a great home base for your life and music compared to London?
Pourquoi as-tu choisi de te baser à Paris plutôt qu’a Londres pour ta vie et ton travail ?
I have never lived in London so I can’t compare. I come from Birmingham, which is not famed for being the centre of the music industry! I found it difficult to get things going in Birmingham, and in Paris I find I have a few more openings because of all the hard work with did on tour with Camille and promoting ‘Le Fil. I plan to
launch my album in France and in the UK (not necessarily at the same time!) so I’ll be able to compare more easily once I’ve experienced both sides of the channel. I must say however that the times we have performed in London with Camille were truly astounding. The audience is very enthusiastic for our work over there.
Je n’ai jamais vécu à Londres donc je ne peux pas les comparer. Je suis de Birmingham, une ville peu connue pour la musique !. J’ai trouvé qu’il etait difficile de démarrer la bas et à Paris , par contre, c’était plus facile avec un peu plus d’ouvertures grâce à tout mon travail en tournée avec Camille pour vanter Le Fil. Je me prépare à lancer mon album en France et au Royaume Uni (pas forcément en même temps !) donc, Je pourrais les comparer plus facilement une fois que j’aurais vécu des deux côtés de la manche. Je tiens à dire que les show avec Camille à Londres étaient vraiment abasourdissants. Le public était très enthousiaste pour notre projet là bas.
