Dajla, French soul/funk songstress and bass player from the burgeoning music scene of Nantes (Hocus Pocus and Tribeqa) will be making a comeback in 2011. Now based in London, she is working on her third album, The Love Principle with her partner in crime, Benjamin Bouton of Tribeqa.

Her EP, The Motherland, a more funk inflected release heavily inspired by afrobeat rythms, saw this little gem emerge – a title track duet with Metropolis of Foreign Beggars.
—————————————–

In the case of Ours (means “Bear”, pronounced OORSE ), this holds true, however he won’t be the one to tell you who his father is. Taking his lead, I won’t reveal who he is either, but just know he is definitely not the son of that guy who once begged Whitney Houston like a dog for a shag on national television. You know, THAT French singer everyone loves talking about. Alas, that’s not him, it’s the other very well-known French singer/actor of the past thirty years.

Since the concert I saw back at the Zèbre a few months ago, Ours has been touring non-stop with Zazie, a much appreciated singer songwriter known for her sometimes sexually charged lyrics and consistently slick online presence. I crossed paths with Ours while backstage at the Furia Festival last weekend in Cergy-Pontoise. Since I was pleased to hear he and his friends had nice things to say about this blog, I decided to ask him a few questions about his relatively new career as a professional singer/songwriter.

After a couple of days of phone tag, we finally touched base last Tuesday. During our conversation, I learned five things about him worth sharing with you.
1. A former graphic designer who attended art school in London, he sees music and graphic design as complementary ways to expressing his emotions.

2. He listens to everything from Timbaland and the Beatles, and if you listen closely enough to the album, he reveals an appreciation for Camille and M. Incidentally, he also gracefully dodged my question on who he thinks is the most overrated French singer, by diplomatically answering “It depends on your tastes, but everyone has a right to exist.”/ Il écoute un peu de tout de Timbaland en passant par les Beatles, et si vous écoutez attentivement son album, il revèle une appreciation pour Camille et M. Au fait, il n’ a pas vraiment répondu à ma question sur le chanteur français le plus surestimé, en disant avec diplomatie, “cela depend sur tes gouts, mais chacun a un droit d’exister.”

3. Ours was introduced to that beared man, he often invites on stage, Djeudjoah (pronounced JOEJO-AH), by a mutual friend Tsinda. “Together it’s a certain madness, that I understand…We had to meet, what he does really speaks to me.”

4. Although he may lose hipster cred among French DJs and their disciples with an all-French album, he hasn’t ruled out singing in English, yet. In mid-sentence, he switched gears and broke out in English with a charming French accent, “Maybe one day I will sing in English.

5. He also insisted that I tell you, “It was a pleasure to perform in front of Zazie’s audience because they were all very open and generous.”/ Il tenait aussi à ce que je vous relaye l’information suivante , “C’était tres agréable de jouer devant le public de Zazie, parce qu’ils étaient tous tres ouverts et bienveillants.

Ours will continue touring around France this summer and with Zazie in the fall before a headlining date at La Maroquinerie in October. Stay tuned for my exclusive video interview with Ours and Dajla coming online soon.

So here goes the first installment in what I hope will be an ongoing digest of the best live indie music in Paris. I’ll do my best to stay on topic, but bear with me as I get easily distracted by all of the great cultural happenings Paris has to offer.

So last night, I saw Allonymous aka Allen Conway at Le Tryptique and was pleasantly surprised by the energy of this emerging American (via Chicago) artist, a rising star on the Paris scene. I first saw Allonymous performing with Tribeqa and Dajla at China Club a few weeks ago, and was impressed with the down-home sensibilty he brought to the show.

Wednesday night, Allonymous and his six-piece band shifted easily from rhythmic spoken word, to funk, with a dash of rock thrown in for good measure. Decked out in red-seamed Xuly-Bet duds, Allonymous energized a sizable crowd of Parisian hipsters with a full-set lasting over an hour of soulful, edgy Rhythm n’ Blues and funk. His spoken word improvisations seemed to get the crowd moving and clearly evoked a young Gil Scott Heron or Sly Stone from back in the day.

The real show stopper was Sandra Nkake, a French-Camerounese singer who sang two duets with Allonymous and whose cheekiness and sophisticated stage presence nearly stole the show. Their soulful exchange was refreshing in its funk/Rn’B authenticity, which is, quite frankly, so hard to find « sans accent » in Paris. What’s more is their Franglais recitatives came off as more organic than gimmicky, which again is the exception and not the norm here. Karl « the Voice », a French soul singer, also stopped by for another harmonious duet that definitely left the crowd wanting more.

fr
